UI/UX @ Berkeley Logo

Project Overview
Every club needs a logo for presentations, flyers and t-shirts. Because this club was founded in Fall of 2022, part of the process of initiating a club was to design a logo that was worthy of a successful club.
My Contributions
From the initial sketchers to the final designs, this process was done by myself with feedback from the club's co-president.

Initial Sketches/Ideas

Yikes are these ugly! But I include them in order to demonstrate the entire design process I went through in order to create the final product.
My initial idea was to include concepts related to user design: diversity, interactions and research. In these initial sketches, I wanted the user symbol to be the focal point, with ‘UX’ being used as a frame. I did not overlap any elements because I wanted them to be visible when printed in black and white.
Why I changed my mind:
❌ Too busy
❌ Wasn't obvious that they represent a UX club
What I kept:
✅ The blue and gold color scheme (Berkeley's colors)
✅ Using the letters 'UX'

The idea that took off...

A 3D Cube

The cubic design was an idea that originated from using sketch guidelines, as I realized that they were an iconic aspect of the early stages of creating a design. By creating a shape with these guidelines, I arrived at the cube layout. I really liked this idea, as it gave me the opportunity to combat the flatness and business which I disliked about my first sketches.

Exploring Variations

Using the basic idea, I experimented with:

▶️ 3D Shadows
▶️ Guidelines
▶️ Roundness
▶️ Thickness
▶️ Color Order
▶️ Depth

Defining & Redefining

A few examples...

No Outline

To Improve:
❌ Center of attention is in the gap created between
     the 'X' and 'U'
To Keep:
✅ Clean design
✅ Seamless combination of the letters

No 'I' in between

Why I changed my mind:
❌ The 'I' would show the 'UI/UX' in the club name
What I kept:
✅ Outline brings out the 3D effect and makes it
     easier on the eyes

Semi-Outlined

Why I changed my mind:
❌ Doesn't look like an 'I' in between the letters,
more like one of the sides of the 'U'
❌ The fact the not everything is outlined proves a bit      confusing to the eye
What I kept:
✅ The outline is an idea worth exploring

Dotted 'I'

Why I changed my mind:
❌ Not obvious that the circle is a the dot from the 'I'
❌ The dot without an outline makes it look separate from      the main design
What I kept:
✅ Outlining the top plane shows the cube shape better

A user's head

Why I changed my mind:
❌ Not obvious that the circle is a user's head
❌ Same issues as some of the previous examples
What I kept:
Nothing, but experiments are worth trying!

The Final Product

I am very proud of my final result, as it is the first time I have designed a logo. The final product is eye-catching and easily identifiable, which has worked great in the posters and presentations used in the club so far. If I were to redesign it in the future, I would tackle the center of the design. As the focal point, the ‘I’ should be more apparent, and the way that the ‘X’ blends into the ‘I’ should look smoother.
